Description/Responsibilities:
The Junior Sous Chef supports the Executive Chef and Sous Chef in managing daily kitchen operations, ensuring consistent food quality, proper food safety standards, and efficient execution of service. This position assists with team leadership, training, prep production, inventory control, and maintaining a clean and organized kitchen environment.
The ideal candidate is a motivated culinary professional with strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to lead by example in a fast-paced restaurant environment.
Key Responsibilities
Kitchen Operations
Assist the Sous Chef and Executive Chef with daily kitchen operations.
Support the preparation and execution of menu items according to established recipes and standards.
Ensure proper portioning, plating, and food presentation.
Monitor food quality, freshness, and consistency throughout service.
Assist with opening and closing kitchen procedures.
Maintain efficient communication between kitchen stations and front-of-house staff.
Team Leadership & Training
Assist in supervising and directing kitchen staff during shifts.
Support the training and development of cooks and kitchen team members.
Lead by example in professionalism, teamwork, and work ethic.
Help assign daily tasks and monitor completion.
Provide guidance and feedback to team members as needed.
Assist with maintaining a positive, respectful, and productive work environment.
Food Safety & Sanitation
Follow all food safety, sanitation, and health department regulations.
Ensure proper food handling, storage, labeling, and temperature control.
Monitor cleaning and sanitation of kitchen equipment, workstations, and storage areas.
Promote safe working practices and proper use of kitchen equipment.
Report food safety concerns or equipment issues to management.
Inventory & Food Cost Control
Assist with daily inventory checks and product organization.
Monitor product usage and minimize food waste.
Assist with receiving and inspecting deliveries.
Ensure proper FIFO (First In, First Out) rotation.
Communicate shortages, spoilage, and product quality concerns to management.
Support portion control and adherence to food cost standards.
Service & Execution
Maintain a calm, organized, and efficient kitchen during busy service periods.
Assist with coordinating ticket times and maintaining service standards.
Step into different kitchen stations when needed.
Address operational issues and communicate challenges to the Sous Chef or Executive Chef.
Ensure all dishes meet the restaurant's quality and presentation expectations.
Requirements:
Food Handlers/ServSafe Food Managers Certificate
Previous experience in a professional restaurant kitchen.
Culinary training or equivalent hands-on experience preferred.
Strong knowledge of food preparation, cooking techniques, and kitchen operations.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Ability to follow recipes, procedures, and food safety standards.
Strong organizational and time management skills.
Willingness to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Ability to stand for extended periods and lift kitchen supplies as required.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
Ability to lift and carry kitchen supplies and equipment within reasonable job requirements.
Ability to work in hot, cold, and humid kitchen environments.
Ability to safely operate standard commercial kitchen equipment.
Reporting Structure
Reports To: Executive Chef / Sous Chef
Supervises: Kitchen staff as assigned
